THOUGHTS #1

This is a comment I attempted to post for an article in New Scientist:

"We have what we need to improve the situation. But, is there the political and societal will to adopt the kinds of change we need? There are thinkers, inventors, iconoclasts and "outlaws" that have the the ideas and the knowledge to begin, but, without the support of politicians and economic forces, we
may as well prepare for the collapse of this "brave new world" into which we have stumbled."

I, like most Americans, am incredulous that the big 3 automaker CEO's decided to come begging in their private corporate jets and that previous beggars have used their alms to throw galas and give themselves bonuses at our expense.

I want this country and this world to be better. Shoring up the house of cards that this economy seems to be built upon is useless. There will be change. Our best bet at this point is to guide that change so that the world can be better for a majority of its peoples. This will require political and corporate and individual will and ethics.

Here is a rough list of areas where a difference can be made:

  • Energy: Fuel cell technology offers great hope and is non-polluting. Bio-fuels are replenishable and clean. Wind and solar technologies can be used on both large and small scale to provide energy and Independence. Even nuclear power (if we can provide safely and securely for the waste) provides great potential.

  • Economics: We must provide for people. A living wage and, at least, limited assistance for the needy so that the stresses of everyday living don't destroy families and lives. If we are to have corporate welfare, it must be tightly regulated. And there should never be bail-outs for companies that continually fail to produce products that the average American needs, wants and can afford.

  • Agriculture and the environment: We do not need mega-farms. Small farmers use land more efficiently and get more production per acre than giant corporate farms that destroy the environment, create a monocultured, less nutritious product (destroying bio-diversity in the land and the health of the consumer). Permaculture and organic gardening techniques offer some valuable techniques.

  • Education: You cannot shove knowledge into any ones mind. But you can entice them into thinking and that is what we need. We are not data-machines. We are thinking, emotional, spiritual individuals. The admen know this and use it to lead us all around to the next "big thing". People of all ages need to think and learn and be able to adapt to new realities.

  • Politics and legislation: There is no need for more unenforceable laws. Educate and lead people. You know that, just because you made a law, it may not complied with or even enforced. Americans, if you scratch deep enough, are not your "common man". We are individuals allied in our search for and expression of the freedoms expressed in our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.

As I've said this is a rough (and incomplete) list. I will follow with more specific thoughts soon. Until then let us be open to more new ideas in our world and I will search for people and ideas that can help.

Keep on smilin'!

Aren't all outlaws immortal?

When (the search for) immortality is outlawed, only outlaws will be immortal. -  The Eleventh Hour (TV series)
